Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has nominated Philip Mpango, who has been serving as finance minister, to be deputy president, according to the speaker of the nation’s parliament.
While accepting the nomination on Tuesday, March 30, Dr Mpango said he has never dreamt of becoming a vice president of the republic of Tanzani.
“Namshukuru sana Rais Samia Suluhu Hassan kwa kulipendekeza jina langu kuwa Makamu wa Rais, ni heshima kubwa sana, sikuwahi kuota, nimepigwa na butwaa,(I thank President Suluhu for nominating me as the Vice President, it is a great honour, I never imagined it, I am surprised),” said Mpango
According to the World Bank where Mpango has served as a senior economic advisor, his previous positions include: Acting Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the Executive Secretary in the President’s Office (Planning Commission) and the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance & Economic Affairs.
He was also the Personal Assistant to the President (Economic Affairs), the Head of the President’s Economic Advisory Unit, Senior Economist for the World Bank, Visiting Lecturer in Public Economics, Collaborative Masters program for Anglo-phone Africa, AERC, Nairobi-Kenya, and Lecturer, Economics Department University of Dar es Salaam, says World Bank.
